The World Health Organization (WHO) says it is "too early" to declare the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in China a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also reiterated that the fact he is not declaring a PHEIC should not be taken as a sign that WHO does not think the situation is serious, or that they are not taking it seriously. PHEIC is defined as an extraordinary event that is determined to constitute a public health risk to other states through the international spread of disease and to potentially require a coordinated international response. In other developments, a desperate hunt was under way last night for 2,000 recent arrivals in the UK from China after at least nine people were tested for killer coronavirus. They all arrived in Britain within the past two weeks from Wuhan, the centre of the deadly outbreak. Experts reveal all they know about China's Wuhan coronavirus outbreak

THE killer coronavirus that's sweeping through China is "as deadly as Spanish flu, which killed 50 million people", experts today warned. Nine people have died and cases have soared by more than 100 in the last 24 hours, reaching 440, Chinese authorities confirmed. British experts have today warned the true number of cases is more likely to range from 1,000 to 10,000. Professor Neil Ferguson, an expert in mathematical biology at Imperial College London told reporters in London the death rate for the new strain of coronavirus is "roughly the same as for The Spanish flu epidemic, at around one in 50". The 1918 outbreak is the most severe pandemic in recent history, wiping out an estimated 50 million people across the world. Prof Ferguson warned of "more deaths to come" as fellow experts said the outbreak has reached the threshold for an international public health emergency - ahead of today's World Health Organization meeting on the issue. Deputy Director of the National Health Commission Li Bin said that all deaths had been in the Hubei province, home to Wuhan city where the first illnesses from coronavirus were reported in late December. The 440 cases were confirmed as of midnight and have been reported across 13 areas of China. Officials are considering putting Wuhan - a city of 11 million, a larger population than London - on lockdown, with people being told to stop travelling and to avoid crowds. It comes at one of the busiest times of the year in China as people prepare to celebrate the Lunar New Year holidays. A separate news conference was then held by Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, along with Senators Dick Durbin, Patty Murray, and Debbie Stabenow as the politicians tried to control the pre-trial narrative. Then after the Senate convened, we heard opening statements from Senate leaders Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer before proceedings officially began. There were several fiery speeches with White House Counsel Pat Cipollone slamming Adam Schiff as ‘outrageous’. A Democratic congressman even quoted rapper The Notorious B.I.G. while answering questions on the Senate floor during President Trump's impeachment hearing. Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, referenced the line from his home borough's beloved rapper on Tuesday as a way to justify the trial to Trump's lawyer, Jay Sekulow. Democrats and Trump's team traded haymakers in the opening round of Tuesday's impeachment fight. Democrats opened the proceedings by demanding Trump be "removed from office" before he can "cheat his way to victory in 2020" as the impeachment trial begins. Trump was charged with abuse of power by withholding US military aid to Ukraine trying to force them to investigate Democrat Joe Biden. He also faces another charge of obstruction of Congress by refusing to cooperate with their resulting investigation. The Constitution gives the House the sole power to impeach a president. The Senate has the final verdict by convening as the impeachment court for a trial. The talks were called by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a bid to strike a peace deal and halt the war-torn nation’s capital being overrun by Russian-backed rebel leader General Khalifa Haftar. Anti-government protests turn violent in Lebanese capital Beirut

Security forces in Beirut fired tear gas and used water cannons on Saturday in clashes with protesters armed with tree branches and sign posts near Lebanon's parliament. After a lull in largely peaceful protests which broke out across the country in October over the state of the economy, people filled the streets again this week. They are furious at a ruling elite that has steered the country towards its worst economic crisis in decades. Police wielding batons and firing tear gas have wounded dozens of people at protests in recent days. Protesters are also angry at the banks - which have curbed people's access to their savings - with protesters smashing bank facades and ATMs on Tuesday night. Lebanon's Internal Security Forces said on Saturday that police in Beirut were being "violently and directly" confronted at one of the entrances to the parliament. In a tweet, it called on people to leave the area for their own safety. Hundreds of people have been infected by a mystery virus sweeping China and Japan, scientists warned today. The SARS-like virus that causes lung lesions has already killed two people and is spreading across Asia. Although there have been 45 confirmed cases, scientists fear up to 1,700 have been infected. Of the confirmed cases, two people are known to have died due to pneumonia caused by a new coronavirus, which appeared in Wuhan city in December. Five others have been reported to be in critical condition and 22 are in a stable condition, said the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission. But a report published by the London Imperial College’s MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analysis claimed there are likely “substantially more cases” of the new coronavirus than have been formally reported. Injured koalas sit in washing baskets and receive care at makeshift Kangaroo Island animal hospital

Animal rescue teams on Australia's Kangaroo Island give medical care to several koalas as they battled to save the lives of the animals injured in wildfires. Video shows injured koalas having their paws cleaned and bandaged. Australia, famous for its pristine beaches and wildlife, has been fighting bushfires since September, with fires killing 29 people and millions of animals, and destroying more than 2,500 homes while razing an area roughly a third the size of Germany. Intense thunderstorms with heavy rains dampened bushfires on Australia's east coast on Friday, to the relief of exhausted firefighters and farmers battling years of drought and granting a reprieve to the organisers of next week's Australian Open. Government agency Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) said 42,727 sheep, 1,152 cattle, 6 horses and 52 other farm animals had either been killed or euthanised due to their injuries on Kangaroo Island alone, according to the RSPCA and local media reports. RSPCA South Australia said one field tent on the island was caring for more than 100 burned koalas. "It's the first disaster zone I've been to and it's overwhelming when you realise the vast majority of koalas on the island have lost their habitat and a significant number have died in the fire," RSPCA South Australia's chief veterinarian Dr. Brad Ward said in a written statement. "It's gone from a situation where there was probably an overpopulation of koalas a few years ago, to now where they're under-population - providing a habitat for those that are recovering will be tough," he added. Iran Supreme Leader Khamenei blasts Trump as a 'clown' as protests force him to lead Friday prayers

Iran's Supreme Leader has blasted Trump as a “clown” who’ll “betray Iranians” after protests forced him to lead Friday prayers. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the comments during a fiery sermon at Imam Khomeini Grand Mosque in Tehran.Aussie zookeepers had to relocate koalas to safety and fend off angry alligators after heavy rain It was the first time the elderly despot has led Friday prayers since 2012, after being forced to show his face to call for unity after the downing of a plane by Iran sparked anti-government riots. Thousands of people attended, occasionally interrupting his speech by chanting “God is greatest!” and “Death to America!” Khamenei called the plane tragedy - which killed 176 people - a "bitter accident" that saddened Iran as much as it made its enemies happy. He said the West had seized on the shootdown, carried out by nervous air defence troops who mistook the jet for a US missile, to question the Islamic Republic. Fears for the safety of koalas after heavy rain saw a “wall of water” hit a reptile park north of Sydney saw the animals being moved and the closure of the site. There was concern that the levels of flooding - not been seen at the park for 15 years - could mean alligators breaching fences. Footage from the Australian Reptile Park, on the Central Coast of New South Wales, shows the dramatic deluge that hit the park. The park said staff were stationed at the Alligator Lagoon to monitor the water levels, which were rising beyond the fence line. One zookeeper in the video is seen using a broom to keep an alligator back. “We’re very thankful for our amazing, quick thinking staff for helping keep things under control and our animals dry,” the park said on Facebook. Firefighters have been filmed using the correct method to give water to a thirsty baby koala and mother on Kangaroo Island in Australia. It comes as it's emerged that a koala that suffered minor burns in the deadly fires has DROWNED after being given too much water by rescuers. The vulnerable bear, named Arnie, was saved from an inferno in Victoria's East Gippsland and sustained small wounds to his hands and feet. However, despite surviving the wild fire, the animal died after being given a drink from a bottle of water by kindhearted strangers. Coverage of the blazes in Australia, which have killed at least 28 people and an estimated one billion animals, has included viral clips showing animal lovers pouring water into the mouths of the stricken bears. However, experts are now warning that koalas should only lap water from a bowl and that pouring liquid into their mouths can fill their lungs which can prove fatal. In the search for injured animals, Conservation Detection Dogs have become one of the most important tools used. Trainer Ryan Tate explains: "Taylor and I have been finding Koalas together for three years now, all up and down the east coast of Australia. She's trained to sniff out their fur and their scats." During the past few months, Taylor has been able to locate at least eight Koalas. Australia's bushfires burning since September have claimed the lives of 28 people, killed more than a billion animals and destroyed forests and farmland the size of Bulgaria. A disaster response team has been deployed to Kangaroo Island in South Australia to begin a search and rescue mission for thousands of koalas and other animals caught in bushfires. The team formed by the animal charity Humane Society International are there to rescue wildlife suffering from burns, injuries, smoke inhalation and other trauma. They will also build water and food stations to sustain the uninjured animals who managed to survive. But according to Humane Society International senior specialist in disaster response, Kelly Donithan, conditions on the ground are extremely harrowing: "These are some of the toughest scenes I've ever witnessed as an animal rescuer. The bodies of charred animals as far as the eye can see," "However, as we set out each day on search and rescue, we're still finding animals alive, injured, dazed or traumatized, and it's such a relief to be able to give them immediate life-saving assistance." "We've seen kangaroos with devastating burn injuries and dehydrated koalas gasping for water. Amidst all this death, every time we find an animal alive it feels like a miracle." Koalas may now be designated an endangered species as so many have been killed. Boris Johnson has insisted he is confident that he can secure a zero-tariff, zero-quota trade deal with the European Union. He also believes that deal would ensure no checks on goods being moved from Britain to Northern Ireland. Johnson was speaking to journalists in Northern Ireland which has to maintain alignment with EU market rules under Britain's Brexit deal - in order to avoid a hard border. In another development, Mr Johnson has been invited to visit Donald Trump in Washington and is set to receive the red-carpet treatment by the President. As the UK roars towards Brexit, the PM and the US President will work to create friendship and goodwill as the allies look at a trade deal. Grim task begins of cleaning up dead animals from Australia's bushfires on Kangaroo Island

Australia and New Zealand military personnel searched for and cleaned up dead animals on Kangaroo Island, as bushfires left up to a billion animals dead or at risk. Australia's bushfires have left up to a billion animals dead - or at risk in the aftermath. On Saturday (January 11) the scene on Kangaroo Island was a grim one. Military personnel from both Australia and New Zealand began the clean up of dead animals, recovering carcasses from what has previously been a wildlife-rich tourist attraction. Major Tony Purdy of the Australia Defence Force said the job, though difficult, was a "vital" one. "It's been a, it's been an extraordinary day, to be honest. It's never a good thing to come across deceased wildlife such as koalas and kangaroos. However, the role we have here is very, very vital and we will continue to be here as long as we needed." Fire services are still working to strengthen containment lines, ahead of worsening weather conditions that are expected to exacerbate the fires further. The Australian government has called the crisis "an ecological disaster," with critically endangered species hugely at risk. According to a Newspoll survey, public support for the country's prime minister Scott Morrison has slumped to its lowest levels amid widespread fury over the government's handling of the fires. Vets work to save burnt koalas as 30,000 estimated to have died on Kangaroo Island in bushfires

"He's a very sick koala but he's one that we do have hope for," says Veterinary Officer Garnett Hall, who is part of a team in Southern Australia working to nurse bushfire-affected koalas back to health. At the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park in the South of Australia, veterinarians and nurses are working around the clock to tend to the burnt wounds of koalas. The koala is facing a possible decimation in numbers due to the raging inferno that spread across various states within the past months. "Now, you can see his coat's got a lot of smoke, it's slightly singed in places, his lungs have a bit of smoke damage to them as well," said Veterinary Officer Garnett Hall on Friday (January 10) while tending to the burnt wounds of a male Koala. "He's a very sick koala but he's one that we do have hope for." Some estimates by experts put the number of animals killed, including domestic pets and livestock, at as high as half a billion, with potentially hundreds of thousands of injured and displaced native wildlife. So far, about 30,000 koalas were estimated to have died from the fires on Kangaroo Island, according to Hall. But he and other veterinary staff are determined to save as much koalas as they can, to nurse them back to full health so that they can ultimately be released back into the wild. Missile expert 100% certain an anti-aircraft weapon took down Ukrainian plane over Iran

Satellite images and heat sensors support western claims that a Ukrainian airlines was shot down by an Iranian missile, an expert in the field said on Friday (January 10). "I'm 100 percent certain that this was done by an anti-aircraft capability and the SA-15 (missile system) has and Tehran was positioned to do that," Riki Ellison, Chairman of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance said. Overhead sensors, both manned, unmanned, and in space, detect heat activity making it possible for the U.S. to know within a "few seconds" where the missiles were headed, Ellison said. Shrapnel at the site of the crash and punctures to the body of the plane are consistent with a damage caused by anti-aircraft capabilities, according to Ellison. U.S. and Canadian officials concluded earlier on Friday that anti-aircraft missiles likely targeted the plane by mistake. Recent tit-for-tat military strikes between Tehran and Washington and poor training may also played a factor. "My belief is that it could have been an error by the crew that was operating this. They were obviously ready to go, trigger happy....They may be equipped very well, but they're not trained to identify friendly from enemy," Ellison said. Iran, which denies the Boeing 737-800 was downed by a missile, is expected to announce on Saturday (January 11) what caused the crash. The Ukraine International Airlines flight to Kiev from Tehran crashed on Wednesday (January 8), killing all 176 people onboard. THE plane that crashed in Iran killing everyone on board was shot down by an anti-aircraft missile, officials have reportedly revealed. Speaking after the news emerged Donald Trump said he believed "somebody could have made a mistake" in firing the missile that brought down the Ukraine International Airlines jet. The tragedy came just hours after Tehran fired at least 15 ballistic missiles at two US bases in Iraq, sparking speculation it was shot down by mistake by jittery Iranian air defences. Ukraine International Airlines said on Wednesday (December 8) that a Boeing 737-800 involved in a fatal crash in Iran was one of the best planes in its fleet and that its pilots were very experienced. The assertion, made at an official news conference in Kiev given by four airline officials, followed the crash earlier on Wednesday which killed all 176 people aboard. Airline officials said there was no sign that anything was wrong before the plane took off from Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport and that it had last been serviced on January 6 From Brexit breaking news to HD movie trailers, The Sun newspaper brings you the latest news videos and explainers from the UK and around the world. A UKRAINIAN passenger plane has crashed near Iran's Tehran airport - killing all 176 on board - as footage of the jet on fire before it hit the ground sparks fears it was shot down. "Germany" had no interest in fighting WWI. It was "Willie's" idiotic inability to get over his megalomania. He was the Trump of the early 1900s. Total narcissist, he fired Bismarck who could have *easily* dissolved and neutralized what had happened in the Balkans. This is not a defense of Bismarck who was a harsh guy and no angel himself. But Wilhelm was a dilettante and in letting go the guy who had virtually kept peace in Europe for 30 years, he opened the door to others bending his ear to use the situation in Austria to look like a defender of "order" and a European hero and the Russians as expansionists. Just read the "Willi-Nicki Letters" where he and his Tsar cousin both play dumb with each other about military buildups at the borders and the "inability" to call off the dogs. It's all pathetic. WWI was pure idiocy. And the Allies were no angels either... what did they think would happen with their colonialism and imperialism, and demanding other nations not be allowed to expand as much? Trying to suggest one side in WWI was more honorable than the other is like saying the murderer who shoots his victims is better than the one who suffocates them.

"Political gain". Is trying to ruin the 2020 election not also for political gain? American politicians are some of the most crooked and backwards in the world. Nothing you can say will change that. Any judge would find you gulity. And any evidence would be admitted into court. The simple fact Donnie dipshit blocked anything shows he had facts to hide. Those on the right need to realise there is absolutely no point trying to reason and find common ground with the left. The left has declared war. The right will either engage in the fight, or die. That means being even more ruthless than the left, if they hope to win...and the left is utterly ruthless. I don't get the impression that the right really is, anymore, which means there is only one obvious outcome. As for social media, that is the left's killing field. If you are dumb enough to venture on it, you deserve all that you get.

that poor child... it's heartbreaking to think how he or she was just left there alone in the kitchen so daddy could bang his paramour & cheat on the child's mother. Don't get me wrong. That's certainly not to say mommy is a prize either or in possession of any more common decency and/or parental instinct than her jackass hubby considering how blatantly unaware mommy obviously was to the possibility of causing permanent damage to the child's ears. Not to mention the gambit of other woeful endings choosing that particular and most drastic means to an end could lay to bare sad indeed

"Most social justice activists are really good people" Hmm. I see _very_ little tangible evidence to support that specious assertion. Instead, even if were possible to extricate the cancerous far left from this loose demographic one is predominantly left with typically self-absorbed, under-achieving, under-employed middle-class white folk farcically unqualified to pontificate on most social issues. In other words the archetypal nobodies desperate to be _somebody_ via any and all means. If only to accumulate power and influence through deceitful piety and faux moralising.... In reality then your average, theoretically 'non-far left' narcissistic social justice advocate doesn't give the remotest toss about the various minorities they rabidly profess to champion. Really.

I don’t know about this facet of Mr. Farage and I have additional respect for him. I’m an American and I am interested in the air war of WWI, and I found this film 1917 done very well showing the horrors of trench warfare. One criticism I have on the film is they betray the Germans as Star Wars stormtroopers, they couldn’t shoot and hit their target, but if they could in this movie, it would be a short story. April 7th 1917 the US Congress declared war on Germany and yes the US wasn’t ready for this war and it took time for us to get up our army and to buy an Air Force from France and Britain. But I know the entry of the America hope fuel the Tommies in their devotion to drive the Germans out along with the American doughboys which my Grandfather was one as the Americans became more involved in the war. I greatly enjoyed this interview.
